Digest: Unwell-Fed proposal, Wal-Mart campaign, Bourdain in Beirut

by @ 7:42 pm on 16 July 2006.

San Francisco Chronicle: The House of Representatives is considering a national toxins law that would override state laws, such as California’s, restricting the use of certain pesticides and toxic chemicals. The result would be weakened protection for consumers and even more lax standards for industries: “Would you like PCBs with your burger?”

Advertising Age: Wal-Mart is throwing millions of dollars into advertising for its organic food offerings. (Man of La Muncha opines: As with everything else Wal-Mart does, expect this to drive organic quality to the lowest denominator.)

New York Post: Culinary adventurer Anthony Bourdain is stranded in under-attack Beirut. (DQ: He ain’t no ethicurean, but he cracks me up. Exhibit A: His comment on Megnut about the ethics of eating meat.)

Marietta Times: A California transplant starts a 90-acre organic farm in Ohio, nurturing the chemical-scorched soil back to life.
