The Montlake Meat group is looking for additional members, according to our reader (and Montlake Meat book maven) Jenni. She also reminded us that we’ve been tardy about sending in our order form. Eep. (I hope she believes the excuse that it was too stained by donuts from our donut tasting, coming next week).

The Butter Bitch and I decided to put out the call here at Ethicurean’s Emerald City branch and the other Ethicureans agreed (though with some jealousy at the thought of tasty beef being delivered to us and not them.) The meat will come from Crown “S” Ranch, which does not use growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides or herbicides. I didn’t find mention of organic certification on their site (the USDA certification is losing credibility, but I’d wonder if they are close to Oregon Tilth guidelines), but their web site says that they do follow “organic practices”. We missed the meat tasting held by the Montlake Meat group so, like omnivores worldwide (including our readers), we are trusting their decision and their taste buds.

Part of the drive for members is to keep the delivery costs down by splitting them across the members. The costs below are based on the goal of 32 members, and the meat group is near the halfway point.

The deadline for joining the CSA is August 1.

The total cost is $420 for approximately 50 lbs of beef, delivered in 6-8 lb. installments of various cuts, and includes the delivery costs. Or you can pay 2/3rds of the cost ($280) by August 1 and $150 on February 1, for a total of $430. The deliveries occur in October, November, February, March, April and June on the second Sunday of the month, with arrangements made for those who are unable to pick up their meat on that day.
We’re going to add on the egg share, which is $28 for 7 dozen eggs, and hope that Crown “S” is able to arrange for lamb delivery through an affiliated ranch. Crown “S” also offers pork and poultry add-ons (we aren’t big pork eaters and we love our Chicken Man chicken).

    Hi! Thanks for the plug for the CSA we’re putting together. My family just visited the ranch, and we were blown away by the energy and intellect “our” farmers bring to the care of their land and animals. I have pics if you’re interested!
