Digest: Choosing what to eat, farmers and farmers markets, and avian flu

Washington Post: The Post passes on excellent advice for those unsure what to eat: Pick ethical priorities, stick to them, and be grateful that you have choices.

AP/Excite: The Senate is after the USDA for failing to have a comprehensive plan to test for the H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza. The poultry industry probably also is concerned. The last outbreak of Avian Influenza in the U.S. occurred in 1983-84, resulted in the slaughter of 17 million birds, and took two years to control.

Albany Times Union: A small Albany, New York, organic farm is focusing more on high standards and high quality than the USDA organic certification. They question the value of the label, though they see the widespread adoption of organic food as a good thing.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: A former Seattle resident has published a book on the recent growth of farmers markets in the United States, with an emphasis on Seattle’s thriving farmers markets. (The Butter Bitch plans to review the book for this blog.)
