Digest: Farm networks, Darryl Hannah’s lachanophobia, and feedlot dairies

by @ 1:12 pm on 24 July 2006.

Wausau Daily Herald: Wisconsin, with the second largest number of organic farms, is growing a statewide network to link organic farmers with each other and with customers. (Note: California has the largest number of organic farms. Texas has the most organic acreage.)

The Sentinel: An organic farm in Pennsylvania hosted an organic field day for attendees from Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and New Jersey. The topics ranged from herd health to organic fly control.

PR Web: The Cornucopia Institute, a nonprofit farm policy research institute, has filed a formal complaint with the USDA regarding alleged violations of organic practices by Aurora Organic Dairy. Aurora also has been the target of criticism by the Organic Consumers Association.

ABC News: Darryl Hannah likes farmers markets but is afraid of vegetables. If Dairy Queen manages to score an interview with her, we’ll do our best to undo the phobia. The article gives a nice overview of the challenges of organic produce (it doesn’t all look the same) and joys (better taste). (Note: The article is from 2005.)
