Digest: Unhappy cows, local meat vs. local backlash

by @ 2:41 pm on 26 July 2006.

San Francisco Chronicle: As heat rises in California, thousands of dairy cattle die, creating a very sad scene as well as unsavory health hazard. Fruit and vegetables are also suffering from sunburn.

New York Times*: Recently, a small group of farmers and entrepreneurs have come up with creative ways to get fresh local meat to the lucrative New York market.

Christian Science Monitor: Local backlash? Different views about what it means to buy local, with arguments about costs to poor communities overseas, such as Bangladeshi children who were left jobless after a boycott on clothing made there. Guillermo Payet, founder of LocalHarvest, contends that exports tend to “enrich the elites,” not the poor, in those countries. An interesting challenge to locavores and Ethicureans alike. (Omniwhore notes: Now if I could only get the image of a tearful Kathie Lee Gifford out of my head.)

San Jose Mercury News: A restaurant along Israel’s border with Lebanon continues to serve its Slow Food as the bombs fall.

San Francisco Chronicle: Whole Foods is “walking its talk” again thanks to the concerted letter-writing efforts of local writer and omnivorean Michael Pollan and the growing, nationwide consumer demand for “locally-grown” produce. But it’s too soon to tell if WF has had a true change of heart or is just conducting a savvy marketing campaign.
