USA Today: Raw milk — a miracle cure or unsafe at any fat percentage? After you read the USA Today story, check out the insta-rebuttal from the American Council on Science and Health, whose independent status many question (the institute came to prominence by downplaying fears of Alar, DDT, and other pesticides).
KAMCTV.com: The Plains Meat Company of Lubbock, TX, has voluntarily recalled over 13,000-pounds of ground beef because of E.coli contamination. Some of that meat had already reached restaurants, but the USDA wouldn’t name which ones. Another article says 4,000 pounds of beef were just recalled in Georgia. (DQ says irritably: You would think that maybe someday the USDA would consider tackling this problem at the source — the feedlots where cows stand, eat, and sleep in their own shit.)
Des Moines Register: More mainstream Iowa farmers are raising forage crops for their cattle to consume, with some eliminating corn finishing altogether. Petroleum use is down, but water is up.
Des Moines Register: A USDA grant-recipient biotech firm urges pork farmers to utilize their ultrasound technology in breeding for the tastiest pork tenderloin.
Minneapolis Star Tribune: Coming this fall to a supermarket near you — less cereal in the box for more bucks. (Corn Maven: “Even more reason to shop in the outer aisles and spend that money on local, organic produce.”)

I find the virulently anti-raw milk people fairly enraging. I’ll have to think about why, exactly, in a future post, but in the meantime, if anyone’s interested, “The Untold Story of Milk: Green Pastures, Contented Cows and Raw Dairy Products” by Ron Schmid is supposed to be good.
