Putting lipstick on our pig
We've just given the Ethicurean a little facelift.
If you see funky remnants of the old site (blue and pink) floating around, then you need to clear your browser's cache. If it looks OK, skip the rest of this paragraph. In Mozilla Firefox for the PC, go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Cache and click Clear Cache. In Firefox for the Mac, it's Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cache and Clear Cache. In Mac's Safari, it's right there — Empty Cache — under the Safari menu. Using Internet Explorer? You shouldn't be. It's a crappy browser and doesn't play nice with stylesheets or new Web standards. Still, instructions here for clearing your cache. As soon as you can, download Firefox. It's free, it's open-source, faster than IE, and all the cool kids use it. Then reload this page, and all should be well.
Q: I liked the old pig. Why did you retire him?
A: It was time for him to "go to market," since he was getting a little long in the tusk. He was also a badly Photoshopped version of a picture that Dairy Queen (moi) "borrowed" without permission from the website Pig Paradise Farm, a great U.K. site for heirloom breeds. (They have the cutest piglet photographs.) So we didn't have a high-resolution version of him, which was problematic as we would like to make t-shirts and aprons and cool canvas market bags someday. But don't worry, he hasn't really gone to market. He's right here (above), so you can visit him whenever you want.
Q: Eh, now that you mention it he does look kinda cheesy. Where'd you steal — uh, "borrow" — the new pig from?
A: "Sloe," our new mascot for sustainable, local, organic, and ethical eating, is entirely legit this time. She was drawn by Adam McCauley, an artist and illustrator, just for us. So there.
Q: Did he design the site too?
A: No. The banner and overall site look-and-feel were the product of Deborah Stalford, a Friend O'Ethicurean and reluctant, though tenacious, graphic designer able to deal with feedback from six far-flung people. Dairy Queen implemented the design in CSS and HTML, and mucked around in the PHP, so if things look funny blame me. This site is running on Wordpress, the open-source blogging platform, which is pretty user-friendly — if you're a programmer. Which I am not. For you Wordpress geeks out there, our site is built on the Journalized-Winter templates by Mike Little, customized beyond recognition.
Q: I don't like the white background/the green type/the brown links.
A: Yeah yeah. Seriously, let us know. This is a work in progress. We'll probably be tweaking things in the next few weeks, so tell us what you hate, or like, and definitely point out any bugs.

Hey, I don't see Pig Perfect: Encounters with Remarkable Swine and Some Great Ways to Cook Them, by Peter Kaminsky, in your list of books. If you haven't read it, I am surprised. And if you have read it, and aren't recommending it, you're going to get a spanking. All of you.
Don't make me stop this car.
Love the new look. Adam McCauley is one seriously talented dude.

Hi Tana,
Thanks for the tip. I can't speak for the others, but I haven't read the book. I'll check it out and consider adding iit to our bookshelf.

Hi Dairy Queen,
I like what you've done to the theme. Nice colours.
By the way it's Mike Little

Mike -- I'm an idiot. Gave you proper credit now.
Thanks for the nice words, and for not minding how much I bastardized and probably butchered your templates. If you have any tips for how to get them to float properly in IE, I'd love to hear them.
