The Economist: Can big agribusiness be weaned “from Uncle Sam’s teat”? The U.S. government spent over $20 billion on farm subsidies last year — more than it spent on foreign aid and almost twice what it spends on subsidising college for poor children.

Fortune: A profile of Chipotle Mexican Grill, which some are calling the fast-food equivalent of Whole Foods. Chipotle, a “values-driven business” in which McDonald’s happens to have a major stake, uses Niman Ranch pork for its carnitas and mixes in natural beef and organic veggies with its other ingredients.

LinuxDevices.com: On the topic of global warming and climate change, take a look at your computer. Consider how much energy and heat your laptop or desktop generates, never mind the amount of heat created by data centers. Via Technologies, a Taiwanese semiconductor company, has introduced a CPU (the brains of a computer) that they promise will be carbon free, thanks to carbon offset programs sponsored by Via. The article includes a “TreeMark” comparison of Via’s CPU and CPUs from the two leading companies, Intel and AMD. (Via Slashdot)

San Francisco Chronicle: What’s New column today is has lots of good S/O/L/E food news, from organic caramels to artisanal ice cream to hot-pink heirloom apples.
