Salt Lake Tribune: The global-warming case for eating less meat and dairy.

Reuters: The Center for Food Safety is calling for the USDA to regulate Bayer’s pesky genetically modified rice strain LL Rice 601 as a “plant pest” under the Plant Protection Act. We have already objected to Bayer’s petitioning the USDA to retroactively deregulate it after it contaminated non-GMO rice in Europe.

L.A. Times: Yesterday saw a historic settlement that outlined the most ambitious river restoration project in California’s history — an attempt to return year-round flows and a long-destroyed salmon run to the Central Valley’s once grand San Joaquin River. Much of the river was reduced to a sandy desert 50 years ago after waters were diverted to 1 million acres of agriculture. The agreement will reduce diversions from the river by an average of 15%; some growers are not happy about giving the water back. (Via Grist)

The Capital Times: Whole Foods is No. 2 in take-out sales in the casual/fast casual dining segment, beating out places like the Olive Garden and Outback. The report, which did not include strict fast-food franchises like McDonald’s, says that a typical Whole Foods (with $35 million in annual sales) sells enough prepared food to equal having a typical Chili’s restaurant in the store.

The Green Guide: Funny (but serious) take on this season’s eco-fashion trends in the age of ever-increasing global temperatures.

Seattle P-I: West Seattle’s High Point neighborhood, originally built as temporary housing for WWII workers, is being rebuilt with energy-efficient and environmentally friendly homes and rentals.
