Digest: Farmers on E. coli, major hop fire, addictive overeating, fish farms

Cheese by Hand: Michael at Cheese by Hand follows up on Nina Planck’s Times op-ed on E. coli with a letter from Andy Kehler of Jasper Hill Farm. Kehler contends that corn subsidies, cheap corn, and the demand that milk and beef be cheap all have contributed to acidified cow stomachs which, in turn, have led to mighty E. coli strains. And he thinks that Planck simplifies the problems and misattributes blame to small farms. (Thanks, again, to Jack at Fork and Bottle.)

AP/Seattle Times: A study by Canadian scientists has linked lice from fish farms to increased deaths among young salmon.

BBC: Brain researchers believe that, for obese people, overeating is akin to drug addiction.

AP/CNN: Yakima Valley in Washington produces 18% of the world’s hop supply and 3/4 of the U.S. hop crop. A fire on Monday destroyed 2 million pounds of hops, about 4% of the national yield. (By way of BoingBoing.)

Worth1000: Worth1000’s photoshop contest, featuring amusing takes on propaganda posters from several countries, includes a photoshopped plea to save spinach. (Also from BoingBoing.)
