Update: It’s raining. The venue is a sea of mud. Looks like the kids have rescheduled this event for Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 12-4 p.m.
A student group called the Society for Agriculture and Food Ecology (SAFE) is hosting UC Berkeley’s first-ever Organic Harvest Festival. It’ll be at Faculty Glade, the grassy area between the Faculty Club and Stephens Hall.
For a mere $3, students and visitors can feast on pumpkin pie and ice cream and grilled “non-GMO sweet corn.” There will be an edible plant sale, plus lessons in making seed balls (OK, I don’t know what that is, but sounds very hippie), herbal tea from the Student Organic Garden (why do I not know about this? I work at UC Berkeley!). Throw in jack-o-lantern carving — a bit late, but why quibble — live turkeys, and tabling by a bunch of the campus’s enviromental, sustainable, and food-ecology groups on campus, and it’s quite possible a good time will be had regardless of the chilly weather.Given that the average age of Slow Food members is at least 40, it’s very exciting to see some young folks picking up the food revolution torch. I’ll be going to the festival, and will report back.
