Two Bay Area farming-related events for tomorrow, Nov. 9

by @ 12:30 pm on 8 November 2006.

In Food and Farming on the Urban Edge, Ralph Grossi — president of American Farmland Trust (AFT) and a fifth-generation Marin County rancher — will talk about farming on the urban edge and the state of agriculture around the nation. He will also detail AFT’s Farm Policy Campaign and its vision for change in the 2007 Farm Bill. A reception will follow the talk, with tastings including Cowgirl Creamery & Point Reyes Farmstead cheeses (YUM!), McEvoy Olive Oil, Hog Island Oysters, Point Reyes Preserves, and Corda Wine. [Thanks, Bruce!]

RSVP: Amazingly, given the tasty spread promised, the event is free, but pre-registration is required. Phone Elisabeth Ptak at MALT, (415) 663-1158, or e-mail julie (AT) cuesa.org.

Details: Thursday, November 9, 6:30–8:30 p.m., second floor of the Ferry Building in the Port Commission Hearing Room.

Sponsors: Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT), the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) and American Farmland Trust.

Sadly, at the same time across the Bay, Temra Costa of Oakland’s Community Alliance with Family Farmers and Ann Thrupp, manager of organic development at Fetzer and Bonterra Vineyards, will be giving a talk for the Future Food Careers lecture series at UC Berkeley. Created by the student-led Society for Agriculture and Food Ecology (SAFE), the series invites women practitioners of sustainable environmentalism to share details of their involvement.

Details: Thursday, November 9, 6:45-8:45 p.m., 106 Wurster Hall, UC Berkeley campus. Free, no RSVP needed.
