NYT digest: Meatpacking crackdown, mystery coli, playing NAIS

New York Times: In what has to be a scene straight out of “Fast Food Nation” the movie, immigration officials have raided six Swift & Company meatpacking plants in six states and carted away thousands of workers. Supposedly it was a massive investigation of identity theft, but we have to think it has more to do with sending a message to illegal immigrants. Once again, the employer — the third-largest meat processor in the U.S. — seems to be escaping unpenalized for employing them.

New York Times: At this point, we may never know the carrier of the E. coli that left more than 400 sick or dead from eating at Taco Bell (although CNN is speculating that it was lettuce). In a sure sign of PR management, Taco Bell’s supplier to in the Northeast, Ready Pac, has been replaced.

New York Times: A routine story about why farmers are resisting the implementation of the National Animal Identification System and why the USDA has backed off — for now.
