Hopping the career fence in search of fresh grass

by @ 5:33 pm on 15 March 2007.

I wasn’t sure whether to post about this or not. But since I’m the type that likes to share any major life news with a megaphone — not unlike my beloved cuz-in-law Omniwhore — the internal debate was short lived. I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it anymore!

As of today, after five years of employment, I am on a leave of absence from my job covering news for UC Berkeley. I might or might not return July 1, depending on how things go; I’m really grateful they’re leaving the barn door open for me in case it’s too cold out here in the self-employed field.

In the meantime, I intend to cook more, including rendering the 25 pounds of fatback in my freezer; take more field trips to farms; interview more people; get the Ethicurean t-shirts and aprons going; finally get the darn meat CSA fully up and running; and — it goes without saying — blog a whole lot more than I’ve been able to lately. And perhaps spend some quality time with the long-suffering Potato Non Grata and our two cats.

I’ll be supporting myself with freelance writing, editing, and consulting work while I flesh out proposals for two food-related books that I desperately want to do. (What are they about? Telling you now would be like showing ultrasound pictures of one’s twin fetuses and asking who they resemble most.)

So, please forgive the self-marketing, but if anyone out there has a possible assignment for me, my personal website has links to past clips for various publications. I also welcome ideas for stories to pitch, people to talk to, and news to cover, not to mention suggestions for congenial agents who might be looking for nonfiction clients….just drop me a note. And wish me luck!

It’ll be great to have you home darlin’. Still not sure I’ll see more of you–but undoubtedly will see less of the cats…
