On the House Committee on Agriculture Farm Bill Page that was launched at the beginning of the week, Rep. Collin Peterson, chairman of the Committee, wrote that “this will be an open and public process, allowing for debate and discussion about all of the issues included in the Farm Bill.” (Emphasis added.)
Later in the week, after a tense meeting of the Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research Subcommittee, CQ Midday reported that “Peterson, D-Minn., told members last night that he had spread out the $20 billion cushion across the draft bill’s 10 titles, but he would not tell members where it would go, according to aides” (again, my emphasis).
These two items don’t fit together. If the process is “open and public,” why won’t Chairman Peterson tell members of his committee and the public how he plans to allocate the $20 billion reserve fund?
