This just in: the House passed a Food and Farm Bill with 231 in favor, 191 against. Nineteen Republicans voted in favor of the bill, while fourteen Democrats voted against it. Initial coverage from the Associated Press (via the NY Times website). The results of the final roll call vote are available here.
We’ll have more coverage over the next few days, as there is sure to be quite a lot of lively commentary.
The next step is the Senate, which will take up the legislation after the August recess.

Did anyone study the COOL legislation, specifically Title XI, Subtitle B, Section 11101 of the Farm Bill? The provision *repeals* a law that prevents the Secretary of Ag from using a mandatory animal ID system to verify County of Origin Labeling. Unless Peterson’s provision was shot down, we just saw the House pass a piece of legislation that could pave the way for mandatory animal ID.
