Secretary of Agriculture quits to run for Senate

By Bonnie Azab Powell @ 8:15 am on 20 September 2007.

Some breaking news: Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns is resigning. "After careful thought and difficult deliberation, I am writing to inform you that I have decided to pursue a new opportunity to serve this great Nation," said the letter that went out to media. Why would he leave in the middle of the Food and Farm Bill fight? My first thought was he had an offer too good to refuse from agribiz, but I was wrong: he's planning to run for senator of Nebraska, for Chuck Hagel's soon-to-be-vacant seat. I expect the Center for Rural Affairs, which is based in Nebraska, will have something to say about this, as will Ken Cook at Mulch. Me, I gotta go to work.

What I find interesting...

From 1997 to 2001, Mr. Conner was President of the Corn Refiners Association, Inc., a national trade association representing the corn refining industry.

It's policy in the Bush Administration to allow only those who already have worked for the people they're supposed to police, er, restrain from evil, to be hired. Conflict of interest is tantamount, I mean, Standard Operating Procedure. (And it's not like the Clinton administration was much better.)

Thanks for the link cookiejill. Your link seems to be truncated, so I shrunk it using tinyURL: Connor's bio.

For more about Connor, Tom Philpott over at Gristmill dug into his archive for a piece that he wrote a few years ago. It covers corn, ADM, HFCS, price fixing and more.
