Building an open-source Food, Farming, & Food Politics events calendar

by @ 11:36 am on 4 October 2007.

It’s bugged me for a long time that there are so many cool events happening all over the country having to do with sustainable food, but there’s no single website where you can go to find out what’s happening, even in each city. We launched an Ethicurean calendar a while ago using Google Calender (GCal), but it’s languished because it depended on Marc and I finding time to add events that were sent to us. However, I think I’ve figured out a way to open the calendar up to all of you — bloggers, conscious eaters, authors, nonprofit events coordinators, chefs, whoever — so you can enter events at will. You just have to join the Food & Farming Events Google Group I’ve set up, and then you should be able to plug your events into this Google calendar. (I’ve already taken the liberty of emailing a bunch of you an invitation to join.)

The Food, Farming, and Food Politics Events Calendar lives on Google’s servers, meaning anyone can display this calendar on their own website. (The code is after the jump.) The less-nerdy can just bookmark its Ethicurean home, at http://www.ethicurean.com/calendar. There’s a new link in the left column, along with one to the calendar’s RSS feed. Here’s what the display looks like — as you can see, it needs some love from you folks in the rest of the country.

You geeky folks can customize your own via the GCal interface, or you can just cut and paste this snippet into your source code:

<iframe src="http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?title=Food%2C%20Farming%2C%20%26%20Food%20Politics%20Events&amp;showTabs=0&amp;mode=AGENDA&amp;height=600&amp;wkst=1&amp;bgcolor=%23FFFFFF&amp;src=dairyqueen%40ethicurean.com&amp;color=%232952A3" style=" border-width:0 " width="490" height="600" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

Great Website! I check it at least three/four times a week.

There is an event on 10/20 at Google Headquarters (Mt.View), called Doof-a-Palooza. Looks like a really cool event, thought I would share.
