“The Devil’s Food Dictionary” on industrial agriculture

The second in our new series contributed by Barry Foy of The Devil’s Food Dictionary, that "pioneering culinary reference work consisting entirely of lies." We’re publishing installments of Ethicurean-related terms whenever we need to cheer ourselves up. (Yes, stubborn old Farm Bill, we’re talking to you!)  

Here’s the DFD on some pertinent terms:

agribusiness An approach to agriculture that maximizes efficiency by eliminating external factors such as human beings.

ethanol Corn that gives you gas.

farm, modern A state-of-the-art rural facility, equal parts mine and factory, specially designed to convert petroleum-based fuels, fertilizers, and pesticides into massive debts and birth defects. Most modern farms are situated within easy driving distance of supermarkets, so that the people living on them will not starve.
