I have much to say on the topic of subsidies, the favorite whipping boy of farm policy reform advocates far and wide (and my personal favorite topic to bring up at parties, only slightly ahead of slaughter. Yep, I’m quite popular!). But with several work deadlines looming, I’ll have to hold off until another day. In the meantime, there are several big ole’ cans of whoop-ass being opened over at Grist with a potent post from Tom Philpott , numerous feisty comments, and a response from Environmental Defense’s Britt Lundgren.
The question at hand: how much impact will subsidy reform actually have on issues like nutrition, farm livelihoods in developing countries, commodity prices, and the environmental devastation that comes with overproduction? And how do we fix this broken system, anyway? Read the articles, and then save up your thoughts for a discussion on the topic that I promise to start in this venue, as soon as I’m out of the weeds for the job that pays me.
