Eco-Farm snapshots

Proving that sustainable agriculture is hotter than a compost pile in July, the 28th annual Ecological Farming Conference known to all as Eco-Farm — from which I've just returned — completely sold out in record time. More than 1,500 farmers, ranchers, educators, and activists descended on Asilomar, the conference center set in a beautiful oceanside national park near Monterey, CA, for a jam-packed three days and more than 70 information sessions. Among those I attended were ones on the health threat posed by genetically modified foods (see my traveling companion Tom Philpott's writeup at Gristmill), the challenges of small-scale organic meat production, whether mainstream retailers can be trusted to market organic food, self-regulation of California's leafy-greens industry, and research into the nutritional value of organic vs. conventional foods. I hope to share some of what I learned when my pesky pinched-nerve issues improve, along with accounts of the lighter side of Eco-Farm — the seed swap, talent show, and dance.

There was a palpable air of excitement to the conference that even the nonstop drizzle couldn't dampen. The original hippie farmers, with their ponytails, grizzled beards, and amazingly buff chests and arms, mingled freely with their fresh-scrubbed heirs; everyone kept saying they'd never seen so many young people at an Eco-Farm. I interviewed a few attendees informally to learn more about who they were and why they were there.

    This was my first Eco-Farm, and I thought it was wonderful. I went to the school gardens tour, and to the sessions on "Food, not Lawns, " "The Wordeful World of Sheep," "Preserving Rare Breeds," "Meat Processing for the Organic Farmer: How to Get Your Meat to Market," plus the plenary sessions with Eric Schlosser and the successful organic farmers. They were all great. I went with the hope of making connections in a field where I read a lot of blogs but don't actually know anyone. Not to put too fine a point on it, I want a job in the sustainable food area in the next few years. It was very inspiring, changing my mind from the pessimistic view that that there is not much to do in the South Bay, where I live. I'm sorry I missed you, Bonnie, but I'll definitely be returning.

    I'm puzzled that young people don't realize organic farming has historic roots. It's not a fad.
    However. Carry on, robustly!

  3. It was good to meet you at EcoFarm this weekend and I am glad to see that you are typing at least a bit to give us this entry!

    Great review of the conference. I was also surprised to see so many young people there. Let's discuss this CSA manager idea sometime soon.

    Good job Bonnie,

    So glad to see you at Eco Farm. Despite the soggy weather it was a wonderful chance to re-bump into everyone, and remember that all these other folks are thinking all these similar thoughts, and fighting all these similar battles wherever they happen to be.

    The most shocking part of the conference for me was when Eric Schlosser told us about the SLAVERY going on in FLorida. Farm workers literally chained up in barnyards, and locked into U-haul trailers.

    Organic and young farmers are not only competing with slavery wages used by Food Corporations with commodity-production off-shore, we are working to provide healthy food in the context of an industrial food-system that dramatically exploits labor domestically as well.

    The other grand shocker at the conference was Andy Kimbrell's reminder about the plight of our seed supplies. I think we loose one vegetable variety every 6 hours, and one domestic animal breed every 24 hours (FAO) to extinction. The scarier fact is that Monsanto is colluding with the Gates foundation to gain access to the Seed banks being built up in the arctic- and have managed to gain access (along with a handful of other companies), to an alarming majority of our country's seed stocks.

    I came away feeling great about our movement, and super delighted by all the lovely people who I forgotten that I used to farm-out with, and with a renewed sense of purpose to keep toiling for the soil, the food and the soul of our sustainable agriculture movement.

    Awesome. Wet, but awesome.
