Stanford Hospital gets Farm Fresh

Recipe for wellness: Stanford Hospital and Clinics’ new Farm Fresh project, launched in a pilot phase last month, brings organic, locally grown and sustainable food to any patient whose doctor approves it and doesn’t cost a cent more than traditional fare. Other Northern California hospitals such as Kaiser Permanente are also offering choices like local, sustainably grown fruit, hormone-free milk, and zero-trans-fat menus, but Stanford Hospital is seeking to make its the largest of its kind, and deliver nutrition education that can extend beyond the bedside. “If patients are convalescing with good food, and that in turns helps them to feel better, even get out a day sooner, then it’s totally worth it – in terms of affordability and making the hospital a more functional and healing place,” says the Stanford doctor overseeing the program. Sounds like a no-brainer to us. (San Francisco Chronicle)

This makes me miss Northern California food culture even more.  I have been very unimpressed with the quality and nutrition of hospital food, and find it puzzling that more attention hasn’t been paid to this.
